Sunday is game day! Photos, videos and notes from LA Day 3...
As usual, the day starts with breakfast, meeting then morning practice..
Whittier are a small independant school of around 1300 students in Los Angeles county who play Div III ball in the SCIAC.
Entry to the locker rooms is past the Aquatics centre
..and next to the basketball hall. Whittiers' teams are known as the poets whose logo can be seen on the floor above.
Memorial Stadium is set in a large natural bowl affording fantastic views across the Los Angeles area.
Warmups start the main event with the Bulldogs facing...
... the Poets. For the day, the Whittier O were in purple with the D in white.
A tale of two coaches... Head Coach Thorpe of the Bulldogs versus Head Coach Hammer of the Poets.
Opening drive and Whittier's starting QB manages to get a pass off (incomplete though from what I remember).
Poet tailback #9 had a strong day of rushing
...and was the only scorer for Whittier on this TD Run.
GB were no pushover though and frequently delivered punishing gang tackles
The Greg Williams appreciation society was in force with his family coming out to LA to watch the Bulldogs play.
Bulldogs RB Germaine "Daywalker" Allen takes the ball downfield (gain of 8 on this play I think)
Officiating was exceptionally good, and DPI was called on Poets' #8 caught here pulling Bulldogs WR #13 Kenny Bello back to earth.
It was a hard fought game by both teams, a few key moments can be seen here... - Germaine scores on a diving TD off strong blocks by Rob Hardy and Martin Ray (2.1mb .wmv)
- Whittier ran the ball hard, as witnessed by Safety Tom Slater who found he needed to check his helmet straps (1.0 mb .wmv)
- A series of key Defensive plays held the Poets from scoring in the final drive of the game as seen here with Tim Martin taking down the runner in the backfield (1.9mb .wmv)
A full game report will be uploaded later along with the delayed webcast commentary and stats. |
